A Casa do Fado is more than a venue — it’s a project founded by three friends, Adalberto, Miguel Silva and Ricardo Ferreira, who started with a single show in a granite basement on Porto’s riverfront. It worked so well that they kept going. A Casa do Fado Sé followed, then A Casa do Fado São João Novo, and last year A Casa do Fado Virtudes. Each one in a different unusual space.
Tickets cost 20€ (includes a glass of port wine) and admission is free for children under 12. The 1-hour show is presented every day at 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM.
What to Expect
Today they perform exclusively at A Casa do Fado São João Novo, set in the old pantries of the São João Novo Convent, dating back to the late 16th century and located beneath the church sacristy. The space sits within the Fernandine Wall, with views over the Douro river and the old customs house. The acoustics are natural and it’s one of the more distinctive spaces to hear Fado in Porto.
The show lasts about an hour. Before it starts, a glass of Port wine is served. During the performance you’ll hear ten to twelve Fados and two instrumental pieces. In the middle there’s a short pause where one of the musicians explains the history and context of Fado.
Admission is free for children under 12, which is genuinely unusual and worth noting if you’re travelling with family.
